Steam Foundation

Steam Foundation

The STEAM (Special Training, Employment, Advocacy and Management for Deaf Persons) Foundation is a non profit organization that helps adult deaf persons to undergo rehabilitation for reintegration to mainstream society and find gainful employment.

STEAM executive director Rose Vergara gave MCHOHI officers and staff deaf awareness training and workshops on how to serve the deaf community.

Quoting Mrs. Vergara, "The deaf need a spiritual support mechanism so they can understand themselves better. Providing them with scientific knowledge is not sustainable. Like other people, they will not find contentment in material things until they attain inner peace," she said.

Mrs. Vergara also pointed out that service providers and caretakers often neglect the spiritual development of people with disabilities and look at them merely as "clients" who should be trained to become productive in their communities. People who train should have "inner peace" as well before they can efficiently help the handicapped, she added.

Thanks to Physicians for Peace International Filipino Board of Trustees, Dr. Juan "Ace Doc", Montero and headed by their Philippine president, Dr. Teodoro "TED" Herbosa, May 6, 2006 marked a new milestone in the history of MCHOHI when the 1st medical mission was done called "Operation Tule" where free circumcision service was given to 100 boys ages 10 to 18 years old. Free medicines were also provided.

Various joint projects were also served by PFP such as surgery for children with hydrocephalus, vaccination for Hepatitis B and other medical services.

SIGHT FOR KIDS project was also served to 3,000 Payatas B Elementary School students in cooperation with the Lions Club International.

These projects were coordinated and made possible by their ever supportive Executive Director. Ms. Lyn Abanilla.

BahayBata127 encountered a lot of children with impacted and infected ear problems during its more than 2 years grooming mission around Barangays Payatas, Commonwealth and Silangan. Later we were informed that there are approximately 5,000 deaf persons (unvalidated) in these communities. One of our medical consultants, Dr. Ted Herbosa of Physicians for Peace International remarked that this number could possibly be reduced in half if there will be a special mission for the curing of infected and clearing of impacted ears as well as giving proper hygiene seminars to the parents for the proper care of their child's ears to prevent further infection.

On March 2009, a partnership was formed with Better Hearing Philippines headed by Dr. Norberto Martinez. With their expertise, the Teachers of Payatas B Elementary School were oriented and trained how to detect deafness through the Ballpen Click Test (Nursery-Grade 2) or the Whisper Test (Grade 3-6). They were given a penlight per class and each teacher recommended students who needs medical treatment.

Next, a medical team came over for school treatment of recommended students with ear problems. Those with impacted ears were treated and some were given oral treatment was given as well.

This school year, BHP again committed in helping the deaf children of the community. They will first give all the deaf children of Bahaybata127 hearing tests and necessary treatments. Next will be their medical mission tour to the various public schools in the community.
